The Fulfillment of Ali's Aspiration, the Embodiment of Loyalty, the Peak of Courage, the Standard-Bearer of Karbala, the Righteous Servant of God

It is impossible to speak of Karbala without mentioning Abbas (A.S.). If Karbala is the story of patience, then Abbas (A.S.) is its courage. If Karbala is the title of loyalty, then Abbas (A.S.) is its interpretation. If Karbala is the message of Hussain (A.S.), then Abbas (A.S.) is its brightest spokesman.

History has witnessed many brave warriors, many loyal companions, and countless sacrifices. Yet none could be compared to Abbas (A.S.). His bravery was free from pride, his loyalty was untouched by self-interest, his obedience carried no conditions, and his love contained no trace of personal gain. He was the embodiment of selflessness, the embodiment of loyalty, and the embodiment of love for Hussain (A.S.).

Whenever the waves of the Euphrates flow, they seem to lament the thirst of Abbas (A.S.). Whenever a banner rises in the wind, it recalls the Standard-Bearer of Karbala. Whenever a new chapter on loyalty is opened, the first name written upon it shines as Abbas (A.S.). This is why, even after fourteen centuries, his remembrance continues to warm hearts, moisten eyes, and awaken souls.

Hazrat Abbas ibn Ali (A.S.) was not only the son of Imam Ali (A.S.); he was the fulfillment of Ali's hopes and the living masterpiece of his upbringing. The greatness, loyalty, and religious honor that Ali (A.S.) envisioned found their complete manifestation in Abbas (A.S.). The blood of Ali (A.S.) flowed through his veins, the purity of Fatima (S.A.) filled his heart, and his soul was illuminated by love for Hussain (A.S.).

From childhood, a unique blend of majesty and beauty was visible upon his face. Those who saw him were amazed by both his appearance and his dignity. Yet his true beauty did not lie in his features, but in his character. He understood that the purpose of his life was not personal glory, but the service and support of the Imam of his time. Thus, every moment of his youth was spent in the service and obedience of Imam Hussain (A.S.).

In Karbala, when only a small group of loyal companions remained around Imam Hussain (A.S.), Abbas (A.S.) stood like an entire army. The enemy knew that as long as Abbas (A.S.) remained, advancing toward the tents would not be easy. His name alone inspired fear in their hearts. On the battlefield, his battle cry shattered the enemy's confidence. As the son of the Lion of God, courage was his inheritance and bravery his nature.

Yet the greatness of Abbas (A.S.) was not limited to his sword. History has known many mighty warriors, but the station of Abbas (A.S.) was earned through his loyalty. A loyalty beyond comparison. A loyalty that made him known as Bab al-Hawaij—the Door of Needs. A loyalty that forever linked his name with that of Hussain (A.S.).

On the Day of Ashura, when the thirst of the children in the camp became unbearable and the innocent cries of Sakina (S.A.) echoed through the tents, the heart of Abbas (A.S.) was overwhelmed with pain. Seeking permission from Imam Hussain (A.S.), he rode toward the Euphrates.

Breaking through the enemy lines, he reached the water. The river lay before him. Cool water filled his hands. He himself had endured days of severe thirst. Yet at that very moment, he remembered the thirst of Hussain (A.S.). He remembered the hopeful eyes of Sakina (S.A.). He remembered the crying children waiting in the tents.

Looking at the water, he spoke to himself:

"O Abbas, will you drink before your Master?"

With those words, he poured the water back into the Euphrates.

At that moment, loyalty itself crowned Abbas (A.S.) as its king. The world had witnessed countless sacrifices, but never had it seen a man abandon water while suffering such intense thirst.

Carrying the water skin, he began his return journey. The enemy attacked him from every direction. One arm was severed, then the other. Yet his determination never wavered. His arms were cut off, but his loyalty remained intact. His body was wounded, but his resolve remained unbroken. An arrow struck his eye, and a blow landed upon his head. Falling from his horse, his final concern was still the same—that the water reach the tents.

That is why Abbas (A.S.) is not remembered merely as a soldier; he is remembered as the Standard-Bearer. A standard-bearer is not simply one who carries a flag, but one who sacrifices everything to protect the cause it represents. Abbas (A.S.) raised the banner of Hussain (A.S.) so high with his blood that, even after fourteen centuries, it continues to fly proudly.

Another radiant aspect of the life of Hazrat Abbas (A.S.) was his devotion as a righteous servant of God. He was not only a hero of the battlefield but also a champion of worship. The source of his courage was his servitude to Allah, and the secret of his loyalty was his profound understanding of faith. He knew that the pleasure of God lay in the pleasure of the Imam of his time. Therefore, he sacrificed every desire, every dream, and every comfort at the feet of Hussain (A.S.).

Many martyrs were martyred in Karbala, and every one of them holds a place of greatness. Yet the station of Abbas (A.S.) remains unique. Upon his martyrdom, Imam Hussain (A.S.) declared:

"Now my back has been broken."

This single statement is enough to understand the greatness of Abbas (A.S.). He was not merely a brother; he was the arm of Hussain (A.S.), his strength, his support, and the pillar of his camp.

Even today, when the oppressed seek hope, they remember Abbas (A.S.). When people search for the true meaning of loyalty, they find Abbas (A.S.). When they seek lessons in honor, dignity, obedience, and sacrifice, the life of Abbas (A.S.) stands before them as an open book.

Peace be upon Abbas (A.S.), the fulfillment of Ali's aspirations.

Peace be upon Abbas (A.S.), the light of Umm al-Banin's eyes.

Peace be upon Abbas (A.S.), the loyal Standard-Bearer of Hussain (A.S.).

Peace be upon Abbas (A.S.), who wrote a new chapter of loyalty on the banks of the Euphrates.

Peace be upon Abbas (A.S.), who lost his arms but never allowed the banner to fall.

And peace be upon Abbas (A.S.), who lives on in hearts, resides in our memories, and is remembered first whenever loyalty is mentioned.
