Billions in losses, depleted military reserves, and an undercurrent of anxiety in Trump’s tone.
Addressing a campaign rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, on October 5, 2026, Donald Trump defended the surging prices of gasoline, diesel, and everyday commodities caused by the ongoing war against Iran. He claimed it was a "small price to pay" to keep America and the world safe. In the same speech, he remarked that Iran could have targeted an American city, adding that damage to Los Angeles or San Diego would have been secondary compared to that cost. These remarks triggered fierce backlash across the United States, forcing the White House to clarify that Trump was not countenancing an attack on American cities, but rather arguing that military action was necessary to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power.
Yet the true political significance of the speech went beyond a single remark: Iran has enmeshed the United States in a protracted conflict whose costs are now being directly borne by the American public. According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, the U.S. had spent roughly $38 billion on the Iran conflict through August 2026, with an estimated burn rate of nearly $3 billion per month thereafter. By September, a revised Department of Defense estimate raised the total cost to $43.6 billion, accounting for direct combat operations alongside the procurement and replacement costs of destroyed aircraft, spent munitions, and depleted military hardware.
This figure is not merely a budgetary metric; it signals an acute vulnerability in the architecture of American power. Reports from Reuters indicate that the campaigns of 2026 placed substantial strain on U.S. missile stockpiles and key strategic inventories, with certain sophisticated systems likely requiring years to replenish to required baseline levels. The confrontation with Iran, coupled with other global commitments and sustained military readiness operations, has stretched American resources thin precisely when Washington faces multi-theater challenges.
Iran’s critical strategic success lies in preventing the costs of the conflict from remaining one-sided, despite Washington’s asymmetric military dominance. The United States possesses the world's most advanced aircraft, precision missiles, carrier strike groups, and the largest defense budget on earth. Yet Iran, leveraging asymmetric resistance, ballistic missile capabilities, and the geostrategic chokepoint of the Strait of Hormuz, generated systemic disruption across the global energy infrastructure. Oil transit through the Strait slowed significantly during hostilities, driving price volatility directly into domestic U.S. consumer markets.
This dynamic illustrates the essence of Iran’s resilience. Tehran never claimed to be immune to damage; rather, it demonstrated that severe losses did not break its operational resistance. Consequently, months into the conflict, the central dilemma confronting U.S. planners is not simply how much attrition Iran has suffered, but how to steer the campaign toward a definitive, strategic conclusion.
Washington exerted military pressure without securing capitulation; it escalated force, yet failed to bring Iran to its knees. The current strategic picture leaves the United States caught between the unsustainable costs of indefinite escalation and the absence of a viable, victorious exit strategy.
This dilemma carries profound consequences for Washington's global deterrence posture. For decades, American doctrine projected the premise that prolonged resistance against its combined arms was unsustainable for any regional adversary. Iran challenged that assumption directly. As noted by Reuters, U.S. military operations not only depleted American strategic depth but also prompted several allied nations to re-evaluate their own defense postures and dependencies.
Trump's characterization of a "small price" has thus become an unintended symbol of this shifting reality. When the president of the world’s leading military power urges citizens to absorb escalating costs at the fuel pump and grocery counter—after tens of billions of dollars have already been expended—it inevitably raises the question: what is the ultimate price of this war, and who is truly bearing it? Economic analyses across the U.S. have increasingly linked the macro-level costs of the conflict to the everyday financial strain felt by average households.
Here, the veneer of unmatched military hegemony begins to crack. Being a superpower is not merely about holding the largest arsenals or commanding an unmatched military budget; the decisive metric is how swiftly, and at what cost, military force can be converted into tangible political outcomes. When expenditures run into tens of billions, strategic stockpiles run low, and global energy markets are shaken—all without forcing political capitulation—the divide between raw operational superiority and genuine political victory becomes stark.
Iran's defiance has laid bare that exact divide. The United States undeniably wields the destructive power to inflict massive damage on Iran, yet Iran forced Washington to confront the reality that immense power does not guarantee victory. While Iran cannot match the material resources of the United States, it leveraged an asset that money cannot buy: the political resolve to endure and hold its ground.
This shift explains why statements from Trump have increasingly coupled assertions of strength with calls to conclude hostilities, curb inflationary pressures, and appeal for domestic endurance.
The strategic reality is clear: while Iran cannot force the United States to declare outright defeat, its resistance has denied Washington the ability to claim victory. That stalemate represents the war's most consequential outcome: the world’s foremost superpower can neither concede defeat nor proclaim victory, and Iran has turned that strategic impasse into its most decisive political triumph.
