"When a person grows old,
their strength lies not in their hands or feet,
but in the gentle tone of their children."
These few words are not merely a sentence; they are a mirror reflecting an entire lifetime.
Parents dedicate the prime of their youth to their children. They sacrifice sleepless nights, suppress their own desires, and set aside personal needs just to ensure their children’s needs are met. At times, they remain hungry so their children can eat; at other times, they let go of their own wishes to fulfill those of their offspring. These very parents, who once became restless at the sight of a single tear in their child’s eye, eventually grow frail with age—so frail that they do not just need a firm hand to lean on, but a gentle voice to comfort them.
Yet, this gentleness does not emerge overnight. Its foundation is laid in the upbringing given during childhood.
Merely enrolling a child in an elite school, providing high-quality education, and making them successful in worldly pursuits is not enough. It is equally essential to teach them:
- How to speak to their parents,
- How to understand their old age,
- How to read their silence, and
- How to view their frailty not as an inconvenience or burden, but as an honored responsibility.
Remember:
The tiny hand you hold today to teach them how to walk will be the very hand that supports you in your frail years tomorrow.
The child for whom you sacrifice years of sleep today must grow up to understand your restlessness, sit beside your pillow, and offer the same care that you provided them throughout your life.
Today, when you tenderly call your child "son" or "daughter," the innocent smile spreading across their face reflects the joy in their heart. But when the wheel of time turns, and this grown child walks over to your trembling steps and speaks a single sentence filled with warmth and love, those few gentle words will mean far more to you than all the wealth, luxury, and comfort in this world.
A child’s true success is not measured solely by high office, rank, or vast wealth; it lies in becoming a decent, compassionate human being—someone who carries empathy, has time to sit with their parents, possesses the patience to listen to them, responds to their vulnerabilities with affection rather than irritation, and holds the conscious realization that caring for aging parents is their responsibility.
Parents, too, must realize that character is shaped not merely through lectures, but through personal example.
Children are nurtured through action, not words. They may forget what we say, but the impressions left by how we act remain etched upon their hearts and personalities for life.
Therefore, instill love, respect, patience, courtesy, and a sense of duty in your children starting today. The foundation you lay in their character today will become the shade under which you find peace, dignity, and care tomorrow.
Perhaps life’s most heartbreaking sight is an elderly father or a frail mother sitting in their own child's house, feeling like an absolute stranger in their own home.
May the Almighty protect us from such an end.
We pray that the Almighty grants parents the ability to provide sound guidance, upright upbringing, and virtuous character to their children, and that He makes children a source of love, respect, comfort, and blessings for their parents.
May no mother endure loneliness despite having children; may no father feel helpless before his own flesh and blood; and may no child realize the value of their parents only when it is too late, leaving them with nothing to say except:
"If only!"
Ameen, O Lord of the Worlds.
