Does such significant disobedience toward the Prophet not constitute a grave transgression and an affront to the sanctity of prophethood?

This question does not stem from emotional polemics; rather, it examines a critical event documented within the most authoritative Hadith compendia of the Ahl al-Sunnah.

The Incident of the Pen and Paper (Waqi'at al-Qirtas) transpired during the final days of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny) worldly life. The Prophet addressed those present around him, asking them to bring writing materials so that he might write a document after which they would never go astray. These were no ordinary words; they proceeded from the blessed tongue of a Prophet about whom the Qur'an testifies:

“Nor does he speak from his own desire. It is nothing but revelation sent down to him.” (Surah an-Najm, 53:3–4)

Furthermore, the Holy Qur'an explicitly commands unconditional obedience to him:

“He who obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah.” (Surah an-Nisa, 4:80)

In Sahih al-Bukhari, it is narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny) commanded:

“Come, let me write for you a document after which you will never go astray.”

At that precise moment, Umar stated:

“The Prophet is overcome by pain, and you already have the Qur'an; sufficient for us is the Book of Allah.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-I'tisam, Hadith 7366)

Following this remark, disagreement and clamor broke out among those present in the room. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny) then commanded:

“Leave my presence!”

Whenever Ibn Abbas recalled this occurrence, he would lament:

“The tragedy—the utmost tragedy—was that their dispute and clamor prevented the Messenger of Allah from writing that document for them.”

The fundamental question arises: when the Messenger of Allah himself summoned writing materials, stating that he would write a decree through which they would never deviate from guidance, ought not pen and parchment to have been provided without hesitation?

Did anyone possess the prerogative to interpose their personal discretion against the explicit command of the Prophet?

The Qur'an declares:

“He who obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah.” (Surah an-Nisa, 4:80)

And He states:

“And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you from, abstain from it.” (Surah al-Hashr, 59:7)

The Qur'an cautions further:

“Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet.” (Surah al-Hujurat, 49:2)

If the Qur'an forbids even raising one's voice in the presence of the Prophet, does not asserting “sufficient for us is the Book of Allah” in the face of his direct command pose a serious inquiry concerning the veneration due to the Prophet?

The Qur'an is undeniably the Book of Allah; however, it is that very Scripture which commands obedience to the Messenger. The Prophet resolved to compose a document—one he affirmed would preclude future deviation—only to be met with the objection: “Sufficient for us is the Book of Allah.”

If presenting personal opinion in opposition to the Prophet’s unambiguous directive, forestalling his instruction, and precluding him from writing does not challenge the boundaries of reverence, how then is an affront to prophetic sanctity defined?

The matter does not conclude there.

Concerning this same event, another narration is recorded in Sahih Muslim. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny) commanded:

“Bring me a shoulder blade and an inkpot, or a tablet and an inkpot, so that I may write for you a document after which you will never go astray.”

The narration proceeds to record:

“They said: 'The Messenger of Allah is speaking deliriously (yahjur).'”
(Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Wasiyyah, Bab Tark al-Wasiyyah li-man Laysa lahu Shay'un Yusi fihi, Hadith 1637)

Here, one must pause and reflect: was it appropriate for such expressions to be directed toward the Messenger of Allah?

Was it a trivial matter to declare “sufficient for us is the Book of Allah” in opposition to his command, and simultaneously utter such phrases concerning him?

How severe must the grief and displeasure of the Messenger of Allah have been for him to issue so stern a dismissal: “Leave my presence!”?

Had this been merely a trivial misunderstanding, would the Prophet have dispelled them from his gathering with such firmness? If failing to present the requested writing materials was of little consequence, why did his tone convey such profound indignation?

This inquiry transcends a single narration; it directly addresses the core principles of decorum (adab), obedience, and the inviolable sanctity of prophethood.

The pressing question remains: in what context was a term such as “yahjur” employed regarding the Messenger of Allah? Was it a benign utterance? Was such phraseology commensurate with the station and dignity of a Prophet?

If opposing the Prophet’s command in his immediate presence, instigating dispute and clamor, and the transmission of terms like “yahjur” remain outside the scrutiny of respect and reverence, what, then, constitutes an affront to prophetic sanctity? Is the inviolability of the Prophet determined by an established divine principle, or is it conditioned by the personalities involved?

If such a compromise of etiquette could occur in the final days of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny), in his direct presence, and during the issuance of his command, we must objectively reflect on the boundaries of reverence and the standard by which it is established.

For whenever the matter pertains to the noble person of the Prophet and his final commands, questions do not simply end; rather, with every attempt at explanation, an even more concerning inquiry arises.
