In the teachings of the Messenger of Allah and the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), taqseer (deficiency) and ghuluw (exaggeration/extremism) represent two opposing extremes.

• Taqseer refers to a deficiency in recognizing the true status, rights, and established virtues of the Ahl al-Bayt (as).
• Ghuluw refers to crossing the boundaries of love and devotion to the extent of attributing qualities, attributes, or absolute authority to creation that belong exclusively to Allah Almighty.

For this reason, the Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt (as) kept the door open for rectifying taqseer, while expressing severe dissociation, condemnation, and rejection toward ghuluw.

The Statement of Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (as) on Ghuluw

Shaykh al-Tusi records in Al-Amali from Fudayl ibn Yasar that Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said:

(Reference: Shaykh al-Tusi, Al-Amali, Assembly 33, Hadith 12)

Translation:

"Beware of the Ghulat (extremists) corrupting your youth, for the Ghulat are the worst of Allah's creation. They diminish the greatness of Allah and claim Lordship (Rububiyyah) for the servants of Allah. By God, the Ghulat are worse than the Jews, the Christians, the Zoroastrians, and the polytheists."
Then he (peace be upon him) said:
"If an extremist turns back to us, we do not accept him; but if a Muqassir joins us, we accept him."
It was asked of him: "How is that, O son of the Messenger of Allah?"
He replied:
"Because the extremist has grown accustomed to abandoning prayer (Salah), almsgiving (Zakah), fasting (Sawm), and pilgrimage (Hajj); thus, he is unable to break his habits and return to the obedience of Allah Almighty. Whereas the Muqassir, once he attains true knowledge, acts upon it and obeys."

Commentary on the Hadith

In this narration, the Imam (as) clearly outlines the severe dangers of ghuluw: diminishing the majesty of Allah, attributing Lordship to created beings, and ultimately abandoning divine obligations. This is precisely why the Imam emphasized protecting the youth from extremists; it is not merely an isolated intellectual error, but a deviation that fundamentally corrupts both doctrine and practice.

Conversely, the Imam's attitude toward the Muqassir is one of reform and acceptance. The reason provided is explicit: "When he attains knowledge, he acts upon it and obeys." That is, once enlightened with true understanding, he readily returns to obedience and righteous action.

This highlights the central contrast of the narration:

• Taqseer is a shortfall that can be corrected through education and guidance.
• Ghuluw is a transgression of boundaries that leads a person away from divine unity (Tawhid) and the sacred law (Shariah).

The lesson is evident: authentic recognition (ma'rifah) of the Ahl al-Bayt (as) does not exempt a person from worshiping Allah; rather, it solidifies their devotion and obedience to Him. The Imam’s intent is not to praise taqseer, but to highlight that while deficiency can be remedied, extremism leads one into a state where returning to the truth becomes exceedingly difficult. Hence, he stated regarding the Muqassir, "we accept him," while regarding the Ghali, "we do not accept him."

The gravity of ghuluw is further underscored by the fact that Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (peace be upon him), openly dissociated himself from extremists. The Ahl al-Bayt (as) never treated exaggeration committed in their name as an acceptable manifestation of love, devotion, or Wilayah; rather, they categorically rejected it as a deviation from their guidance. True love for the Ahl al-Bayt (as) must remain subordinate to Tawhid and grounded within the bounds of servanthood ('ubudiyyah) to Allah. Any devotion that violates the boundaries of Allah’s Lordship is not love for the Ahl al-Bayt (as), but rebellion against their core teachings.

The Quran’s decree is definitive:

اللّٰهُ خَالِقُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ
"Allah is the Creator of all things." (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:62)

And He states:

إِنَّ اللّٰهَ هُوَ الرَّزَّاقُ
"Indeed, it is Allah who is the Continual Provider." (Surah Adh-Dhariyat, 51:58)

Therefore, while the greatness, guardianship (Wilayah), and all established merits of the Ahl al-Bayt (as) are undeniable truths, independent creation, provision, and absolute Lordship belong solely to Allah Almighty. Ascribing these attributes to any created being as an independent, inherent authority is not a minor theological nuance; it is a grave deviation that undermines the very foundation of Tawhid. While acting by the divine permission (Idhn) of Allah is an entirely separate theological discussion, attributing independent creation, sustenance, or Lordship to a creature is an altogether different matter. Elevating the status of the Ahl al-Bayt (as) by diminishing the majesty of Allah is not love—it is extremism, and the stance of the Ahl al-Bayt (as) toward it has always been absolute disavowal and rejection.

Likewise, the term Muqassir must not be weaponized or used indiscriminately. An individual who refrains from adopting a particular interpretation, practice, or non-foundational theological claim does not automatically become an enemy of the Ahl al-Bayt (as) or deficient in faith. For instance, refraining from reciting a specific phrase within the formal prayers due to requiring clear textual evidence (shar'i proof) is not evidence of denying their love or Wilayah. Theological terminology must be judged by objective criteria and sound proof, not emotional rhetoric.

The true criterion is balance: neither diminishing the status of the Ahl al-Bayt (as) nor attributing divine partnerhood to them in matters exclusive to Allah Almighty. Taqseer is cured through genuine knowledge, and ghuluw is remedied by returning to the limits set by Tawhid.

Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq's (as) words do not restrict love for the Ahl al-Bayt (as); they direct it along the right path. Let there be love, allegiance, and acknowledgment of their virtues, provided that the center remains Allah's unity and the goal remains His obedience. In this balance, the authentic recognition of the Ahl al-Bayt (as) is preserved, and the religion remains shielded from harmful deviations.

The ultimate standard of love for the Ahl al-Bayt (as) is not measured by subjective claims, but by their own teachings. The path that guides toward divine unity, worship, and obedience is the true path of love; and where the boundaries of Allah's Lordship begin to blur in their name, holding the line is the genuine preservation of their legacy.
